Key work packages
Here is an overview of the new exciting ideas we plan to work on.
Over the next 10-30 years, major changes are anticipated in the way electricity is generated, transported and consumed in an urban area. The very large number of DERs, measurement and control devices, grid edge technologies and local multi-energy systems that are connected to the urban power systems challenges the conventional urban power supply paradigm of mostly relying upon the external bulk power supply, gathering all data at a central point and carrying out centralised control by power utilities.
Situational awareness is a critical component of sustainable urban power supply to ensure security and reliability under an uncertain and constantly evolving threat landscape
This WP will investigate smart interconnection of different urban zones using Soft Open Points for accurate, real-time and resilient control, and smart interconnection of multiple players using distributed ledger technology for truly decentralised trust-based control.
SOPs are able to provide active power flow control, reactive power compensation and voltage regulation under normal network operating conditions, as well as fast fault identification, isolation and supply restoration under abnormal conditions in coordination with protection devices and distribution automation.
This WP will develop representative case studies, validate the effectiveness of the proposed multi-energy control, undertake the cost and benefit analysis that is crucial for the adoption of the proposed methodologies by utilities, and provide recommendations for implementation.
